The history of the Washington Army National Guard dates back to 1854 with formation of the Washington Territorial Militia. The Washington Army National Guard was there. We have been involved in every major conflict from World War I to the Iraq War and in peacekeeping missions such as Bosnia and Macedonia. But most importantly, we have been helping our neighbors. From flood relief in Ellensburg in 1948 to Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. The Washington National Guard has responded to help its fellow neighbors of Washington State. Washington Army National Guard members continue to be a vital part of domestic response to emergencies and natural disasters. The Washington Army National Guard was there in 2005 as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, where over 750 Washington Guard pilots, mechanics, supply and admin specialists, truck drivers and many others supported humanitarian relief efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
