The nation oldest military branch, the Rhode Island Army National Guard consists of more than 2,200 members serving both state and federal governments. The Rhode Island Army National Guard has served and remains a active force in the Global War on Terrorism, with units that have deployed worldwide in direct support of national security objectives. In times of local emergencies and natural disasters, The Rhode Island Guard is called upon to provide military support to civil authorities. Despite being the smallest state, Rhode Island is the only state with a Special Forces unit, a Special Operations Detachment unit, and an Airborne Infantry unit!
Free Tuition to State Schools – State Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) Members of the RI Army National Guard are eligible for a tuition waiver for up to five classes (5) per semester at a RI state institution. The state schools in RI that offer free college classes are Rhode Island College, The University of Rhode Island and The Community College of Rhode Island. Classes must be towards an associates, bachelors or masters degree. Members must be in good standing with the RI Army National Guard. This program can be used in conjunction with the GI Bill. Books and fees are Soldier’s responsibility. Basic training or AIT is not required to use the STAP waiver.
